Why I Relate to Joyce Byers from Stranger Things
When the buzz of Netflix’s new show Stranger Things was going around on the internet, I knew that I needed to finish the binge session I was on and get into it. Little did I know how much I would feel a connection to the mother Joyce Byers played by Wiona Ryder.
She’s always been a favorite actress of mine but she really brought the love and fierceness into this character.
I work hard to give them everything I can
Like Joyce, I work as hard as I can to make sure my kids get the basics and a bit more. Joyce reminded her boss how she never really asks for a day off and she comes in on time and is the hardest worker that he has.
Even though she doesn’t feel like it at the time, saying that out loud allows us to see that she is doing her best to set a good example for her kids. And we’ve both felt like we might not do enough but our children really do appreciate everything we’re doing.
There’s nothing like a nice big hug and I love you mom from your kids.
Encourage them to embrace their ‘weirdness’
Over the years Korey has been loving shows and characters that are deemed more “girly”. Some parents would worry about this but I don’t give one second thought to it. Nothing is weird unless you put that label on it and we’ve worked so hard to get Korey being able to talk and attend a normal classroom. Everything else is trivial.
I would talk to them through the lights
I’m tell you when I watched Joyce make the connection of the lights to Will, I cried so hard. She never gave up on finding out what really happened to him, even though she didn’t have any explanation as to why it was happening at first.
There would be no stopping me in purchasing all the lights in my local Walmart if I was put in that situation. Call me the crazy lady but nothing gets between a mama and protection her kids.
