Encourage Your Child to Help in the Kitchen and Clean up with Wet Ones
I have partnered with Wet Ones® Hand Wipes to help give you ideas that allow your child to be more involved in their food. Even though my children both have their eating issues due to sensory and special needs, I still find it important to have them get hands on when it comes to what they will eat.
Identify Food by Name Early
If you give food a name early your children will be able to start to understand which foods are their favorite. While some children have issues with texture, you want to give them the chance to try everything.
Worrying about a food being too messy or they’ve tried it a week ago and didn’t like it can hinder them finding new foods they like. As parents we sometimes eat food that is more appropriate for adults and can be harder for children to eat, steak, shrimp, asparagus, etc.
During dinner time you should share what you’re eating if it’s different and talk to your children about what it is, the taste and when you first enjoyed it. These little simple conversations can make a big impact on their eating as they get older and a loving memory when they share it with their family.
Sandwiches are the Best to Try First
There is a very sad statistic of 91% of moms who do not allow their children to participate in an activity if it’s messy According to a recent study conducted by Wet Ones®. I will fully admit that I used to be this way until I was told how it can have a bad affect on my children.
Sitting down with Kyler and his OT therapist to try and get him to get messy was a wake up call. Although I didn’t give him his sensory avoidance to getting messy I was encouraging it by not making him get more hands on.
Food is the perfect way to introduce getting messy for a purpose! And you can help build gross motor skills and fine motor movement when you include utensils like a knife to make a sandwich.
Whether it’s peanut butter and jelly or Kyler’s favorite choice grilled cheese. We practice him holding the knife and spreading the mayonnaise which is where he usually gets the most messy. And we grab our Wet Ones® Antibacterial Hand Wipes that cuts down on messes and kills 99.99% of germs when you don’t have the time to resort to water and soap.
