One of the first items I was gifted for my first son was a baby album from my best friend. I looked through all the pages and was a bit overwhelmed by all the ‘firsts’ they wanted me to write down. While I thought I was going to be the best mom ever and capture every single one, I was wrong. With my second son I am capturing my favorite firsts and learning how to not beat myself up so much for missing some.
First smile. First laugh. First time walking. First time dancing. There are so many firsts that children have and sometimes it can feel like everyone is asking you when they did their first ____ and you realize you missed writing that or capturing it on camera. My suggestion to first time parents to be, find your favorites.
What would you really be devastated to miss and be able to tell people exactly when it happened? Pick a handful of them and do your best to really take note of those, if you can fit others in good for you! Having a baby is not a time to make yourself feel like a bad parent, trust me when I say that others will point those stupid things out but just let it fall off your shoulders.
Favorite First
My ultimate favorite first is the smile. You will probably catch that adorable grin in their sleep first before it really comes out and lights up the room. I had a rough few months in the beginning of Korey’s life. For some reason I flipped a psycho mom switch and wouldn’t let anyone do anything for him. I fought diaper changes, cuddling, playtime, and this drove his father rather batty. Not only was I putting more stress on myself but I was also taking away fun memories for Korey and his father.
Once I started to ease up and let his father and others in for help I became calmer and more fun to be around. The one thing that helped me start to see that others needed to enjoy him as much as I did was the first smiles. Whether they were from gas or him being happy, they let me know to slow down and look at the gummy grin I was getting. Once they became more frequent and he could express his happiness through a smile, I knew that things would get better.
