Congratulations you’re pregnant! Now what is going to happen at your first prenatal appointment?
When I found out I was expecting our second, I tried so hard to remember how the first appointment went but I drew a blank. I know that you call your OBGYN and make the prenatal appointment. Most practices do not want to see you before 8 or 9 weeks. So you can guess that you’re date will be pretty close to that for your first appointment, and unless something is wrong then you will not be seeing that cute little bud anytime soon.
Things you will need:
- Insurance Card
Make sure you try and remember the first day of your last period, that helps them to determine your babys’ due date. You will fill out paperwork if you’re already not a patient, and get your weight and height taken. Then off to your own little room where you will strip down to your underwear so the doctor can check you.
They will make sure there is no pain in places that there shouldn’t be, and go over what to expect over the next few weeks before making another appointment. It’s a pretty simple prenatal appointment, and one of the easiest. Eventually they will be checking you for dilation later on in pregnancy, if you are uncomfortable usually when you get checked I encourage you to let them know. I have a bad history so it’s a 50/50 chance on how an exam can go, they have this noted in my chart and are very good with me.
Another note, if you feel like you do not like or trust your prenatal doctor remember that you can always get a new one any time you want! Do not feel afraid to change, and make sure you’re comfortable with the hospital as well. Wherever your doctor delivers, you are expected to deliver at as well.
