10 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Appliances
Spring cleaning is a time when you handle all those nit picky tasks that you push to the back burner the rest of the year. Whether it’s cleaning the seal of your refrigerator or cleaning out the dryer hose, these are items that no one likes doing, but definitely need to be done. These tips will help you get the job done.
Get the Kids Involved
Kids are perfect for a number of these jobs because they are closer to the ground. Seriously, though, there are a number of these jobs kids can do and, depending on age, your children may love to be involved and helping.
Use a Mixture of Vinegar and Baking Soda for Tough Stains
You don’t have to break out toxic chemicals to get rid of the tough stains. Mix vinegar and baking soda to create a paste and leave it on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes. If the stain isn’t gone the first time, repeat the process. This mixture is great for cleaning stains out of the fridge because it not only cleans, but sanitizes as well.
Check the Dryer Hose for Trapped Lint
Something you want do each year, or anytime you notice your dryer taking longer to dry, is to disconnect the hose from the dryer and make sure it is clean of dryer lint. Trapped dryer lint can not only cause the dryer to take longer, but can also cause fires.
Change Out Your Furnace Filter and Write the Date on the New One
This is also a great time to change your furnace filter and write the date on the new filter so you’re not wondering when you need to change it. Invest in a good filter that filters out as many allergens as possible.
Give the Fridge a Thorough Cleaning
A thorough cleaning of your fridge is a job that will take a couple hours. First, you want to remove everything from the unit and toss anything you’re unsure about or has expired. Remove the drawers and shelves and clean thoroughly. Next wipe down the insides of the fridge with a mixture of vinegar and water. Lastly, make sure to clean the seal. This is a place where mold can build up and will need a good scrubbing.
Run the Self-Clean Option on Your Oven Early in the Day
Chances are you clean your oven more than once a year. However, if you follow steps to keep it clean, you may not need to. Either way, the self-clean option takes a long, long time. Make sure you start the process first thing in the morning so that you can use the oven later in the day.
Freshen and Clean the Microwave with a Mixture of Lemon Juice and Water
In a medium-sized bowl, mix an equal part of fresh lemon juice and water. Heat the mixture on high for 90 seconds and allow the mixture to sit in the refrigerator for 5 minutes. Once the mixture is cool enough to handle, dip a cloth in the mixture and use it to clean away the stuck on dirt that will have loosened during the heating process.
Use a Cleaner Made Specifically for Dishwashers
Your dishwasher can’t get your dishes clean if it’s dirty. Purchase a dishwasher cleaner and follow the instructions to get your dishwasher clean and fresh.
Clean Out the Deep Freeze Completely
Once a year, you need to clean out your deep freeze completely. As you take out each item, have two boxes: Keep and Toss. You want to toss anything you’re not sure about. If you have a freezer that needs to be defrosted, now’s the time to do so. Put anything you plan to keep in your smaller freezer and remove the other items to the outdoor trash cans. Lastly, give the inside and outside a good cleaning with a mixture of water and vinegar to clean and sanitize the unit.
Do a Thorough Cleaning on Your Humidifier Before Putting It Away for the Season
The last job you want to tackle is to clean your humidifier thoroughly before putting it away for the season. Clean out any hard water deposits and make sure the inside is completely dry. This will help prevent mold from building up in the unit while it’s in storage.
